Pilsner Lager

Pilsner lager is light in color and relatively highly carbonated, with an alcohol content of around 4% by volume. Pilsner Urquell (“Original Pilsener”) is the first and best example of pilsner beer. Most of today’s pale lagers are based on Pilsner-style beers.

Until the 1840s, most beers were top-fermented, dark and cloudy. The first batch of modern pilsner was created on October 5, 1842, by Josef Groll. He used new lagering techniques and newly available paler malts. The new malts, the soft Czech water, the particular type of hops and the Bavarian-style lagering produced a clear, golden beer which is highly popular and widely copied to this day.
